Abstract faces

April 12, 2011

I don’t know if you can really see the detail here, but I was trying some new things.  I covered a sheet of watercolor paper with gesso, but very unevenly.  Once it had dried, I used watercolor paint on top of the gesso, and got some interesting effects.  In some places the paint didn’t ‘stick’ to the paper, and in other places it soaked right in.  Still working on glazing and layering paint, practicing patience as the layers dry.  I outlined the faces with a black Sharpie paint pen.

Namaste,

Jackie

I had to enlarge the photo to see the different textures but it was worth it. I really like your work but being included in your process is something extra special!

I enjoy painting on Gessoed paper, Jackie. It takes time for me to build up the image on it. I like how I can erase areas with a sponge and refill with another idea. Good start, here! :)

Really interesting. I like the psychological implications. I also like to use sharpies with my watercolors occasionally…gives a totally different feel.

Thank you all for your comments. Linda, you’re right about the psychological implications – I think it’s a bit of a self-portrait depicting how I was feeling when I painted it. Leslie, I’m really enjoying working with watercolors and the gessoed paper adds so much to the process. It’s bringing a whole new dimension to my work. Andrea, I’m glad you enjoy my work.
